A Story

Recently I was asked to share a "cool story" that has happened to me. You'd think that I'd pick the time a reality star thought my blog and tweets were so funny that we exchanged numbers, became friends, and had dinner and drinks together. Or the time that I met Kelly Ripa, Mark Conseulos, Ellen Barkin, Andy Cohen, and Anderson Cooper in a bar in New Orleans. Or maybe the time I won a ribbon at a national coding competition when I was in college. Oh wait, that's not cool. I'm a geek.

So, for my cool story. As you know, my father passed away when I was young. You may or may not know that he was a pool player. He was actually in a tournament when I was born and refused to leave because it was my mom's fifth trip to the hospital thanks to false labor. (He won, so I forgive him.) Anyway. My aunt had a book with his picture in it. Billiards Congress of America - The Official Rules and Record Book, 1987 Edition. His picture was in the back because he was on the Men's #1 Team that year. It was tattered, falling apart, and had been written in (including an obnoxious circle around his head). She offered to give it to me, but I wanted my own.

I scoured the internet looking for the book and eventually found a guy who sold Billiards memorabilia. I emailed him. The exchange went something like this...

Me: Hi. I'm looking for the Billiards Congress of America rule book from 1987. My father was on the #1 team that year and his picture is in it.

Mr. Man: I do have some of those, but they made all different versions, so it might not be the one with your father. What is his name?

Me: Well, his name was Rance Walter, but that isn't listed. It just has "Men's #1 Team - Texas" underneath the picture.

Mr. Man: Good news! I found one! I usually charge $15 per copy, but I just so happen to have one that has "WALTER" written on the front, so it's yours. What's your address? I'll mail it to you right away.

When I received the book, I asked my mom for something with my dad's handwriting on it. I'm no graphologist (yes, I had to look that up) but I'm pretty positive that it was his handwriting.

That, my friends, is my favorite "cool story". What's yours?

Wednesday Whereabouts

Mike Mike Mike Mike Mike. What day is it Mike?

- I have a lot going on at work over the next two weeks. I'm busy busy busy.

- I skipped my workout session Monday morning but I went today and I feel fabulous.

- I walked around my neighborhood Monday night and Tuesday morning. It's about a mile and a half, which is nothing to brag about, but I kinda love it.

- Yesterday, I ate lunch by myself at a restaurant. I thought it would be more awkward than it actually was.

- I've always wanted to go see a movie by myself. Maybe I can do that now. The Conjuring?

- It's HUMP DAY! Here's to getting through the rest of the week!

Music Mondays

A few months ago, I started a music blog.

I'm a concert junkie. I think I've been to over 50 concerts in the past year. And that doesn't count the music festivals I attended. Recently, I had a conversation with a musician who called me a music connoisseur and referred to me as "Faye from the Internet". He was most likely talking about my Twitter, but I figured I'd expand my music connoisseurism to a blog. Now I just have to learn how to describe riffs and maybe also what riffs are.

In all seriousness, I'm a music lover. I am not a musician. I couldn't carry a tune if you paid me and the most difficult piece of music I can play is a keyboard version of the chorus to "I Love You Always Forever" by Donna Lewis. So if you love music and want to learn more about great artists from someone who also loves music (and isn't a pretentious know-it-all)...this is the place for you.

Join me in the crowd.

After just 4 posts, it fell by the wayside. Instead of trying to salvage it, I'll be bringing new music posts back here. I've added "Find Me in the Crowd" to my sidebar so you can be updated on all the concerts I'm attending. I'll be posting artist reviews, album reviews, concert recaps, and playlists on Mondays (when I feel like it).

I don't have a full post for you today, but I do have an album recommendation or two.

I can't wait to share more music with you!

The Skinny on Being Skinny

Okay, so. I have wanted to talk about my struggle with weight loss for a while now, but I just felt like I didn't have the right. I have read many inspiring and motivational posts about women (by women) who have struggled with weight their entire lives. I haven't. Being thin always came easily for me.

photos from 2004-2006, 16-18 years old

The scale never read 3 digits until I was in college. And even then, I didn't gain the freshman 15. But then it all changed. I gained about 10 pounds my sophomore year. And then 10 more my junior year. And it didn't stop there.

College Graduation, May 2010

After graduation, it got worse. I finally decided to acknowledge the problem 9 months ago.

Nov 3, 2012

Looking at that picture, I just can't even believe that was me. That is me. No wonder the cute guy I tried to flirt with that night wasn't interested. I didn't realize I looked like that because I was in denial.

It's time to hold myself accountable and actually work to reach my goals. It doesn't come easy anymore.

Let's talk numbers. I've never shared these with anyone, but I'm hoping it will help motivate me to actually admit it to myself if I admit it to everyone else.

In November, I weighed 163 lbs. At 5'1", that's a 30.8 on the BMI scale and is technically "obese". I started lightly working out and being more careful about what I eat, but didn't do anything drastic.

By February, I was down to 152.6 lbs, a 28.7 BMI, which is at the top of the "overweight" section on the scale.

Feb 8, 2013

May 1, I weighed 148.4, still "overweight" at a 28.0 BMI.

July 13, 2013

Today, August 7, I weigh 142.2, a 26.9 on the BMI and still in the overweight category.

Aug 1, 2013

By November 1, I'm hoping for at least a 24.9 BMI, so I can be in the "normal weight" category. That means I need to weigh 132 lbs or less. That gives me about 3 months to lose about 10 lbs. I'm serious about this goal and will do everything in my power to reach it. And then some.

132 by November 1 is only goal Number 1. After that, I'll set a new goal. And then keep going from there.

It feels so good to finally discuss this with myself. Hopefully I can help motivate others to be honest with themselves, too. Whether it's about weight loss or something else. Until you admit that you have a problem, you can't work on a solution.

Inspiration is welcomed!

After the Final Rose

First of all, is Chris Harrison suffering from memory loss? I know every season has to be the most dramatic season ever...but he says there's never been a season quite like this. Does he not remember Ali's season? Guy with a girlfriend? Check. Someone leaves before the overnights? Check. She sends someone home at the end and only has one at the final rose ceremony? Check. Plus, Brandon (Des) and Kasey (Ali) are basically the same person.

Anyway. This season ended just as I suspected. Brooks goes home and never returns, Desiree ends up with Chris, and Drew and I start dating.

Well, that last part hasn't happened yet. Until then, I have Mosby.

Now, Juan Pablo as the next Bachelor? I'll take it! Drew was my favorite all season, but I don't want him to be the Bachelor. Mainly because I haven't applied but also because I think he's sensitive and I wouldn't want to see him go through the drama. Juan Pablo will be nice eye candy. I just hope they get him some classy broads. He has a daughter for goodness' sake. Please no Tierras or Courtneys or Viennas. (Those are the first 3 awful people that came to mind.) Let's wife him up with someone awesome!

What did you guys think about the finale? And are you ready to see Juan Pablo as the Bachelor?

My July goals can be summed up in one word...

Fail fail fail fail. I did make some damn good spaghetti sauce, but I don't measure anything so I have no recipe to share. I didn't even pick up a book. I did yoga once...all month. I never went on a walk. And I did not lose three pounds. Instead, I gained 3. (Down 9 for the year.)

August Goals

1. Sign up for a class

2. Wash my car

3. Increase my savings

4. Meditation/Quiet Times

5. Work toward my weight loss goal

As a University employee, I can take two free classes per semester. I'm thinking a foreign language or a literature course!

I've had my car for over a year now and it has never been cleaned. Time to get the soap and bucket out. And by that, I mean time to support a local business and take it to a car wash in town.

I have a small cash savings and another small auto withdrawal into a savings account. Both are monthly. I need to get in the habit of putting money away weekly. Starting in August.

I'm alone a lot (I like it that way), but I'm always watching TV or browsing the Internet (BuzzFeed). I haven't spent a lot of time just sitting and clearing my mind. I definitely need to do that more. Daily.

I've had "lose 1 pound" and "lose 3 pounds" as a goal every month this year. For the most part, I succeeded. Next week, I'm finally going to share my story about struggles with weight. I have a plan to get where I want to be...and I begin implementing that plan today.

Are you still working toward your 2013 goals?
